That’s always been the Port Adelaide way: find great people, demand excellence, and expect premierships. Somewhere along the line, that focus seemed to drift. But lately, there’s a sense that things are turning back in the right direction.

This off-season, Port’s new coaching panel has given supporters real reason to believe the focus is finally back where it belongs. The additions of Luke Webster, Andy Collins, Darren Reeves and now Stuart Dew, alongside Josh Carr, have reshaped the football department into one that looks serious about success (with one key piece, the GM of football still to come).

And here’s the key difference: they’ve come from outside the Port bubble, not just another internal promotion from a failed regime. They bring fresh eyes, new ideas, and most importantly, experience in winning environments.

• Luke Webster, a former Fremantle player with coaching experience at Carlton and West Coast, adds depth and perspective from two AFL programs.
• Stuart Dew is a two-time AFL premiership player, with Port and Hawthorn, and had been involved with Sydney and now Brisbane as an assistant coach in premirships.
• Andy Collins also has premiership experience, as a player with Hawthorn and as a coach in the VFL.
• Darren Reeves brings SANFL premiership experience coaching Glenelg, ensuring the group has genuine local success credentials too.

These are the kinds of appointments The Black and White Noise, and plenty of Port supporters, have been calling for: quality people from outside the club, who know what it takes to go all the way.

The club is finally making the sort of strong, football-first decisions that members have been hoping to see for years. We appreciate all of the work that has been done off field over the last decade on the financial and community side, but at the end of the day it has been 2 decades since our last flag! In spite of that, when these decisions are being made, it’s easy to get behind the club and be positive about where it’s heading.

Carr’s Edge

At the heart of this new direction is Josh Carr. Hard, uncompromising, and passionate, Carr embodies what Port Adelaide stands for. His influence is already obvious, standards are rising (in words if not yet in action), accountability is back, and there’s a renewed edge around the place.

Leadership That Gets It

It isn’t lost on us that the presence of Warren Tredrea and George Fiacchi on the board has added more football nous and focus. Both men understand the Port Adelaide creed , that success is measured in premierships, not participation.

Their voices help keep the focus where it should be: on building a club capable of winning again. All three of these men deserve kudos for bringing the football focus back to Port Adelaide and for bringing in quality people, from outside the bubble, that can help make that dream a reality.

Proof

Of course, good moves and good intentions only go so far. At Port Adelaide, the ultimate test has never changed, you’re judged by the silverware.

The early talk from the new coaching group are promising. The word around Alberton is of a team embracing Port’s proud traditions: hard work, humility, and hunger. That’s what we want to hear.

But as every Port person knows, the proof is in the pudding, or, more accurately, in the premierships. Until that success is achieved again, everything will be measured against that standard.

A Step Forward

Still, for the first time in a long time, it feels like Port Adelaide is starting to look and act like Port Adelaide again. Recruiting from outside. Bringing in people who’ve been there and done it. Putting football first. Focusing on on field success.

That’s what The Black and White Noise has always been about, not tearing the club down, but holding it to its heritage and celebrating when it gets things right.

Right now, it feels like the pieces are starting to fall into place. And if this new, football-focused approach continues, there’s every reason to believe that Port’s next great chapter might just be on the horizon.

Because at this club, there’s only ever been one goal, to win premierships. Always has been. Always will be.
